The first-described mitochondrial-derived peptide, encoded within mitochondrial 16S rRNA, with cytoprotective activity and circulating levels that fall with age.

Based on research: a central molecule in mitochondrial-signalling and longevity biology. Higher circulating humanin correlates with longevity in human cohorts and with lifespan extension in animal models.

Mechanism of action

Binds a trimeric gp130/CNTFR/WSX-1 receptor complex and FPRL1 to activate STAT3 signalling, suppress Bax-mediated apoptosis, and improve insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial function.
