Overview

A cyclic non-selective melanocortin-receptor agonist originally developed as a sunless-tanning agent. PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a related metabolite developed from this scaffold.

Based on research: a non-selective melanocortin agonist studied historically for tanning response and, at central MC4R sites, for sexual arousal. Preclinical and early human data drove development of the more selective downstream compound bremelanotide.

Mechanism of action

Broad agonism across MC1R-MC5R produces melanogenesis (MC1R), CNS-mediated sexual arousal (MC4R), and appetite suppression (MC4R) in preclinical and early human studies.
